Civil Litigation - John has substantial experience in both state and federal courts of the Commonwealth, having handled cases at all levels of trial and appeal, including appeals before the Supreme Court of Virginia and the U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals. He has experience representing a variety of clients with sensitivity and responsiveness to their needs, including large banks in need of local counsel, to citizens' groups engaged in fighting environmental problems and unrestricted development. His broad-based experience with diverse and unusual issues has enabled him to develop proven, cost-effective legal strategy with all of his clients.
Criminal Defense and University Judicial / Conduct Referrals - John's experience as the director of the Student Legal Services office at Virginia Tech for eight years have given him particular insight to the problems and concerns of the student population in the community. Many students fail to realize that their criminal, drug and alcohol violations could have a significant effect on their college education. Separate administrative bodies - the Office of Student Conduct at Virginia Tech, and the Dean of Students at Radford University - will receive conduct referrals from local law enforcement for violations that take place off-campus which are considered violations of the University Policies for Student Life (at Virginia Tech) or Standards of Student Conduct (at Radford University), and which may pose a threat to the health and safety of the university community. If you have received a criminal, drug, or alcohol charge, the sooner you contact our office, the more options we may have to help you.
Nearly half of John's practice involves defense of criminal, drug, and traffic offenses in General District and Circuit Courts of the New River Valley.
Divorce and Custody - John's extensive background in divorce and custody litigation began with his first job at Legal Aid, when he was already managing a large caseload upon graduation from law school.
His approach to divorce is sensitive to the difficult emotional and financial problems faced by his clients and their children while they go through the legal process. He will strive to reach solutions that enable his clients to co-parent effectively with their ex-spouse, and to ensure that his clients have clear guidance to help them choose a course of action that will minimize problems that occur before, during, and after their divorce. He often draws from his education in developmental psychology and his work as a guardian ad litem for children to help his clients cope and rebound from the stress of their legal battles.
Residential Property Management - John provides advice and counsel to the majority of property management companies and residential rental providers in Blacksburg and Radford. He will provide concrete advice to his clients that enable them to reduce common resident concerns, and to improve their bottom line figures by reducing legal costs proactively. He particularly enjoys providing instruction and assistance to his clients to refine leasing documents and regulation handbooks that result in fair, clear policies that benefit property owners and residents alike. His clients appreciate the benefits of his specialized knowledge of landlord-tenant law since he began practicing in this field in 1996.
John and his family live in the New River Valley area, where they enjoy hiking through some of the most beautiful countryside areas in the nation. He also enjoys practicing kendo, the art of Japanese swordfighting, with his wife.
